Con: Iraq War

Why can't Bush at least compromise?
Both the House and Senate have come together to resolve their differences regarding the Iraq funding bill. This level of cooperation in Washington is a welcome site, but it seems that the President won't budge. Why can't he at least sit down with them and work something out?
Bush does not want a timetable for withdrawal. I know he thinks that setting a timetable would be bad for the war effort, but what about a phased withdrawal? Maybe not set a time frame for all the troops to come home, but set a timetable for the withdrawal of something like 25% of the troops. Then the Iraqis will get the message that we aren't staying there forever. Many of the insurgent attacks are from Iraqis who don't want to US occupying their country. If they see a plan, and the plan is implemented, they will stop their attacks. Most Iraqis just want their country back. In addition, the Iraqi people need to take responsibilities into their own hands, and withdrawing troops will force them to take actions to help themselves.
We do not want to look like an occupying force, but that is exactly what has happened. The US has been in Iraq for far too long and if we don't leave soon, the Iraqis may never learn to live on their own. If we have to hold their hand through everything, they'll never have a stable government of their own. The best choice is to for the President to compromise with the Congress and really hand over power to the Iraqis.
